From the look of the
threatening
skies early in the morning, along with the heavy rainfall the night
before, this year's Special Olympics State Golf Tournament appeared
to be headed for a cancellation. However, luck was on the side of
all the Special Olympians who gathered from all over the state of
Tennessee at the Smyrna Golf Course this past Monday, September
21st. Surprisingly, most of the day was rain free and mostly
everyone escaped getting wet. The golf course was in great shape and
all of us fully enjoyed the day. This year, Area 16 was proudly
represented by the following L.E.A.R.N. (Life Enrichment And
Recreation Network) Golf Team members; Josh Lathrop, Shawn Byington,
Eric Davis, in Level I Skills Competition. In Level II Partner Play,
the team of Christopher Lacy and Roy Lacy. We also had two
partners/volunteers who participated in Level I, Ivy Bell and
Jeniffer Smith. This is our second year of competition and the
progress made by all participants has been quite apparent as their
scores have improved over the previous year. Next year, we hope to
build on this year's successes as we get more and more players and
partners involved in our program. Next year we will have two new
partners and trainers, Jay Camperlino and Rowan Millar who are
excellent golfers. Once again Special Olympics put together an
outstanding Tournament. A special thanks goes to Hal Loflin from
Smyrna Golf Course and the City of Smyrna for their support of
Special Olympics Golf, our Coaches, Tricia Lacy, Dave Davis and all
the parents who supported our program and a very special thanks goes
to Lou Paschal and John Harris for their support and service to Area
16 Special Olympics. Pictured left to right are Ivy Bell, Coach Dave
Davis, Eric Davis, Josh Lathrop, Partner Player Roy Lacy ,

Golf Team Play at Special Olympics Middle Tennessee Golf Tournament
Our golf team finally kicked things off on July 1st at Stoneybrook Golf Course in Columbia after rain postponed our first tournament back in June.
Jennifer Smith, on her very first Tournament,
scored a 58. She is working on qualifying to be Josh Lathrops
partner in future events and just missed doing so by 2 points.
Josh had a score of 65, beating his last years score in Level
I competition.
Eric
Davis also improved his score, in Level I play, from last year with
his 51. Roy Lacy partnered with his son Christopher, on a 9 hole
alternate stroke play and scored a 65 in Level II play. We saw many
friends from last year including Clint Blalock and his dad Eddie.
They had practiced with our team the week before the tournament at
Smyrna. Other team members not present include Keith Ivey and his
dad J.R., Steve Marshall and his son Ryan. It was great to get back
on the golf course and spend time with all our friends from last
year. Our next Tournament will be at the Bear Trace Harrison Bay
Golf Course in Chattanooga on August
12 followed by Champions Run on August 27 and ending up at the State
Tournament in Smyrna on September 21.
